Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Climbing annual herbs.

Stems: Stems up to 6 m long, hirsute with multicellular glandular hairs.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades broadly ovate–cordate with a narrow basal sinus, 7–16 cm long, 7–18 cm wide, usually 5–angled or sometimes shallowly palmately 5–lobed. Apex abruptly long-acuminate, the narrow apex often breaking. Upper surfaces hispid; lower surfaces scabrid. Margins dentate. Petioles 4–7 cm long, glandular pubescent. Stipules absent; tendrils in the stipular position 2–3–branched, glandular pubescent.

Flowers: Flowers in staminate flowers in glandular pubescent panicles 2–10 cm long, peduncles 1.5–7 cm long, pedicels 3–7 mm long; pistillate flowers 6–12 per head, peduncles 0.5–1.8 cm long, hirsute with multicellular glandular hairs, pedicels 1–2 mm long. Flowers usually unisexual (and the plants monoecious or dioecious), actinomorphic. Calyx of 5 sepals, inserted on hypanthium. Corolla of staminate flowers greenish yellow, 5-lobed, 5–7 mm in diameter, glandular pubescent, petals inserted on hypanthium alternate with calyx lobes, usually connate at base, the limb often rotate; Corolla of pistillate flowers 5-lobed, perianth usually smaller than in staminate flowers. Stamens in staminate flowers (2)3(–5), inserted at base of hypanthium; filaments connate into a column; anthers curved or flexuous, coherent and twisted in a head, opening by longitudinal slits; pistillate flowers: staminodes absent. Ovary inferior, of a single carpel or 3-carpellate with carpels connate into a single 3-lobed cell; ovule 1, placentation parietal; stigma 3-lobed, the lobes reflexed.

Fruit: Fruit brown to black; ovoid; 6–8 mm long; 4–5 mm in diameter; outgrowths spreading; ca. 3 mm long; densely pilose with pale; multicellular; glandular hairs; indehiscent. Seeds ovate; endosperm absent.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Occurring in dry forest or alien vegetation.

Elevation Range: 0–800 m.
